The concept "strategic alliance" covers a wide variety of collaborative business partnerships. Often the concept refers to joint ventures which are established to harness the complementary resources of the parties. These resources may relate to production, development, marketing, support and distribution.

A strategic alliance may be fashioned in a variety of ways in relation to equity investment, external financing, and transfer of know-how or other assets.
